Tutor Groups
At The Henry Cort Community College, we believe that strong relationships are at the heart of every student's success. Our commitment to supporting each young person begins well before they join us in Year 7 and continues throughout their time at the college.
Working closely with our partner primary and junior schools, we provide a comprehensive transition programme throughout Years 5 and 6. This includes visits, transition activities, information evenings and ongoing collaboration with primary colleagues, helping students to feel confident and prepared for the move to secondary education.
We recognise that starting a new school can be both exciting and challenging. Particular care is taken to ensure that students and families joining us from schools outside our immediate community feel welcomed, supported and quickly become part of life at Henry Cort.
Our Tutor System
Every student belongs to a tutor group and remains part of a year-group pastoral team throughout their journey at the college.
We operate a year-group tutor system, with six tutor groups in each year group. Tutors work closely with Heads of Year and Assistant Heads of Year to provide day-to-day support, guidance and encouragement.
Tutor time is an important part of the college day and provides opportunities to:
- Build positive relationships.
- Support student wellbeing.
- Develop organisation and study skills.
- Celebrate success and achievement.
- Share important college information.
- Encourage our ASPIRE values.
- Monitor academic progress and personal development.
Tutors get to know their students well and are often the first point of contact for students and families. In addition to supporting the tutor group as a whole, tutors regularly meet with students individually to discuss progress, wellbeing, aspirations and personal targets.

Working in Partnership with Families
We believe that students achieve most successfully when families and college staff work together.
Throughout the year, parents and carers are invited to attend consultation meetings, information events and workshops to discuss their young person's progress, achievements and wellbeing. We also encourage ongoing communication through EduLink, helping us to build strong partnerships that support every student to thrive both academically and personally.
Together, we create an environment where students feel known, valued and supported to achieve their full potential.
