Pupil Premium Funding
The pupil premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged students and close the gap between them and their peers.
“It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual students within their responsibility.”

Pupil Premium at The Henry Cort Community College
We have high aspirations and ambitions for our students and we believe that no child should be left behind. We strongly believe that it is not about where you come from but your passion and thirst for knowledge, and your dedication and commitment to learning that make the difference between success and failure.
We are determined to ensure that Henry Cort students are given every chance to realise their full potential. Pupil Premium (PP) funding, along with allocations made from the schools own budget will help ensure this money is spent to maximum effect.
Pupil Premium Spending
Our pupil premium money has been used to provide a range of additional support for our students and these interventions. Each year we review funding and its impact.
What do we do with the extra money at The Henry Cort Community College?
We use the money in a variety of different ways to ensure that every student makes at least their expected level of progress, if not more, including:
- Additional staff to recognise when a student has an issue and to provide the help and guidance needed to overcome the issue such as small group work and 1:1 support. This may also include additional teachers in Maths and English and the purchasing of additional intervention schemes.
- The provision of essential equipment to ensure full access to the curriculum.
- Training of staff to identify and meet the needs of all students.
- Financial assistance with curriculum trips and extra-curricular activities that add cultural capital, such as music lessons.
- Ensuring that ALL students can attend extra sessions by providing or subsidising transport.
- A greater focus on communications between the college and parents/carers to help parents work with us and to increase attendance.
- Summer school and additional events to improve the transition process from Primary to Secondary school.
Through targeted interventions we are working hard to eliminate barriers to learning and progress. One of the college’s aims is to ensure that ALL groups of students make good progress in order to reach age related expectations as they move through the college.
Information to be published
In place of the current requirements regarding information about pupil premium expenditure, schools are now required to publish their 'PUPIL PREMIUM STRATEGY. This should include:
- the provisional amount of the school's allocation of pupil premium grant
- details of the main barriers to educational achievement
- how the allocation will be spent to address the barriers and why these approaches were taken
How will the school measure the impact of the Pupil Premium?
To monitor progress on attainment, new measures have been included in the performance tables that will capture the achievement of students covered by the Pupil Premium. At Henry Cort, the Assessment without Levels model will allow all students who are not secure in the age related knowledge to be easily identified and an intervention to take place.
Raising Achievement Panels (RAP) with will take place at each data collection point (approximately every 12 weeks) and includes the Principal, Raising Standards Leader, Faculty leads and Governors. At these meetings, the college will review the impact of actions taken and will plan for how the funding will be specifically allocated over the next phase. When selecting students for Pupil Premium target groups, we will look at all students across the college. There are some students who are not eligible for PP who will also benefit from these groups, if their needs are similar and we believe progress can be made towards individual targets.

Eligibility for Free School Meals
A parent may wish to check their child's eligibility for Pupil Premium or continued free school meals (from Key Stage 2) and HC3S has an online system for this.
You will need to enter your name, address, national insurance number or asylum support service number. In addition, you will need to provide your child's name, date of birth and identify the school they are attending.
Parents/guardians in England do not have to pay for school meals if they receive any of the following:
- Income Support
- Income-Based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Income related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
- Working Tax Credit 'run-on' - the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
Pupil Premium is an important payment for schools and a really good opportunity for eligible parents to get even more support for their children in schools.

If you think your child may possibly be eligible for free school meals, even if you don't want your child to eat school meals, please call into the office to collect a claim form. Every child who is eligible generates valuable income for the college.
Service Pupil Premium
The Service Pupil Premium (SPP) is provided by the Department for Education to enable schools to offer additional, mainly pastoral, support during challenging times. This could include anything from a Service parent being away, being injured on active service to bereavement.
At Henry Cort we invest this money into the student support teams. We also employ a Premium Champion who leads various outreach projects throughout the year, which includes SPP students, and who liaises with the Fareham Service Family Support network.
Schools with Service children are eligible to receive SPP, but only if the child's name appears on the school roll as being a Service child. The annual census takes place in January and children must be registered with the school before this date.
Service parents have been encouraged to contact their children's schools to make them aware their children are from a Service family.
