Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At The Henry Cort Community College, we are committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of need, are supported to achieve their full potential and fully participate in college life.

We provide a range of support tailored to individual needs, enabling students to achieve academically, develop socially and emotionally, and prepare successfully for adulthood.

Our provision is guided by the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and is delivered through high-quality teaching, targeted interventions and strong partnerships with students, families and external agencies.

How we identify and support students with SEND

We work closely with partner primary schools, parents, carers and external agencies to identify students' needs as early as possible.

Support may include:

  • Diagnostic testing and screening
  • In-class support
  • Targeted interventions
  • Emotional wellbeing support
  • Specialist resources and equipment
  • Small group teaching
  • Alternative curriculum pathways
  • Transition programmes
  • Links with external professionals

Every student on the SEND Register has a personalised Pupil Passport, which provides staff with information about:

  • Strengths and interests
  • Areas of need
  • Recommended teaching strategies
  • Reasonable adjustments
  • Support arrangements

Teaching and Learning

SEND students are supported through high-quality adaptive teaching across the curriculum.

Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) support students by:

  • Helping students scaffold their learning
  • Developing independence
  • Encouraging resilience
  • Building confidence
  • Celebrating progress

Many support staff have specialist subject knowledge and work alongside faculty teams to support students effectively within lessons.

Additional Support and Interventions

Working with Parents, Carers and Students

We believe students achieve best when home and college work together.

Parents and carers are involved through:

Admission Arrangements for Students with SEND

The Henry Cort Community College welcomes applications from all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Admissions are managed in accordance with Hampshire County Council admissions arrangements. Students with SEND are admitted using the same arrangements as other applicants, although additional transition support may be provided where appropriate.

For students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), admissions are managed through Hampshire County Council's SEND Team.

Supporting Students with Disabilities

We are committed to ensuring disabled students are not treated less favourably than their peers.

Reasonable adjustments are made where necessary to support access to:

  • The curriculum
  • Educational visits
  • Enrichment activities
  • Examinations
  • Wider college life

Accessibility

The college continually reviews and develops accessibility across the site.

Support and facilities may include:

  • Accessible classrooms and learning spaces
  • Adapted learning resources
  • Laptop and assistive technology provision
  • Accessible toilet facilities
  • Specialist equipment where required

Further information can be found in our Accessibility Plan and Accessibility Policy, available within the Policies section of the website.

Access Arrangements for Examinations
