Subject Information

At Henry Cort, students are encouraged to become independent learners by developing skills for planning, monitoring and evaluating their own learning in Mathematics. Since Mathematics is an essential component of education, it is important that students feel they can confidently use Mathematical skills in everyday life and enhance their learning in other areas across the curriculum.

Students enjoy their Mathematics at Henry Cort, with 57% saying that it was either their favourite or second favourite subject in school. Some have appeared on the numerous Teachers’ TV productions made in school stating this fact and displaying some of their skills.

“I loved maths, it was my favourite subject”

“Believe it or not, not only do we have a laugh in maths, I really learn a lot.”

Enjoyment of Mathematics is key to what we are trying to promote. We realize that the pupils motivation, attainment and progress cannot be maximized unless they are involved and enjoying the subject.

We encourage innovative practice and the introduction of a league system recognizing students’ progress has created a both a ‘buzz’ and some competition in our curriculum area.

We believe we are a very good department that makes a significant contribution to the life of the school – a perception acknowledged by a large majority of the students.

We operate very effectively with high expectations of all students and the department thrives on positive relationships both between staff and students.
