Snow Update - Monday 21st January 2013

Categories: College News

Unless the weather deteriorates overnight, the College will be open as normal for all students on Monday 21st January.  The roads leading to the college are clear however the pavements on routes to/from the college are still likely to be icy.  The site team have worked hard over the weekend to ensure the main paths around the site are clear and have been gritted in preparation for the overnight conditions.

Staff and students are reminded to take care of slippery surfaces as a result of the freezing conditions tonight and in the morning.

Please check the website for any further updates and we would also like parents to advise students that snowballs will not be permitted on site - the snow is now mixed with ice and therefore is not suitable for throwing.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

It is very unlikely the college will close unless there is a large deluge, in this case the normal procedure will be employed where by a notice will be placed on the college website, emails will be sent and local radio stations will be contacted.

Categories: College News

We are very pleased with the outcome including six areas where we were judged as “Outstanding” and improvements that have been made in behaviour and attendance since the last inspection.

The Ofsted inspectors have judged that we are a “Good” school with several “Outstanding” areas including the quality of the care and guidance and the effectiveness of our curriculum to enable students to have personalised opportunities.

This is a very encouraging report and reflects the hard work of students and staff. I would also like to thank you for your continued support which is also a key component in their continued success.

Each student will receive a personal letter from the Ofsted inspectors and I will be discussing the report with students in assemblies next week.

With best wishes

Royal Navy submarine HMS Triumph visits youngsters at The Henry Cort Community College

Categories: College News

On 30th November, nine crew members from Royal Navy submarine HMS Triumph visited

students at The Henry Cort Community College.  HMS Triumph (S93) is a Trafalgar-class fleet submarine launched in 1990 and currently in service. The crew, led by Lieutenant Nick Stone are on a tour of all of their affiliated organisations in the UK and The Henry Cort Community College was their first stop.

Young people at The Henry Cort Community College are divided into a number of houses, which are named after notable Royal Navy vessels including Triumph, Daring, Invincible and Victorious. Rob Shepherd, Triumph house leader organised the day.

For members of the Triumph House, the day started with a unique assembly with members of the crew followed by an impressive crew demonstration and related exercise on the design of a submarine. Prizes which included unique Royal Naval badges were awarded by the crew members to the best design teams. During the afternoon, the crew were interviewed by students from Triumph House for the college newspaper.

Senior students in Years 10 and 11 were invited to join the crew for lunch. Many of the youngsters have aspirations for a career in the armed services and this proved to be a great opportunity for them to meet acting servicemen and understand more about their duties.

It is the first time that the Royal Navy has sent such a large group on a tour of this kind visiting all of their affiliated organisations. When the submariners left, they were straight on the road to Malvern to visit another school that has a Triumph House. Later in the week, they will be visiting Triumph Motor Cycles Headquarters before going to Blackpool, their adopted city where they will be guests at the Blackpool v Manchester United premier league match.

Mr Phil Munday, Principal at The Henry Cort Community College said, “We have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming the Royal Navy to our community. It provides an excellent opportunity for us to further support our young people to reach their full potential and encourage them to respect the selfless sacrifice, courage and exemplary service of our British troops.”

Mr Munday is keen to explore plans for future liaison with the Royal Navy and to ensure that young people at The Henry Cort Community College understand and respect the magnificent men and women serving in our Armed Forces on the frontline.

All the houses at The Henry Cort Community College are colour coded. Triumph is in fact yellow so the lyrics “We all live in a yellow submarine” seem particularly apt!

Henry Cort Year 11 Student Exam Success

Categories: College News

It has been another record breaking year at The Henry Cort Community College with GCSE examination results for 2010 the best ever, putting them in a strong position nationally.

58% of youngsters achieved five or more GCSE grades A*- C including English and Maths, which is up from 44% last year – an impressive rise of 14%.  Incredibly, 77% of students achieved five or more good GCSE grades across all subjects - a 5% increase on last year.

One measure of success is the number of students who achieved 5 or more A*-C’s.    This number rose from 45% in 2005 to 77% this year. This is an outstanding achievement with particular success in modern languages with 87% of pupils who took a modern language examination achieving a grade A* to C.

Several students were delighted with their results including:

·      Georgiev Pavel who moved to England 7 years ago and although English is not his native language, achieved a grade B in English. He is now looking forward to going to college to study ‘A’ levels

·      Dan McTaggart had a 12% chance of getting 5 A*- C grades and his hard work and determination resulted in him considerably exceeding this result including a good grade in maths.

·      Head Girl, Georgina Manners and Head Boy, Alex Holt performed exceptionally well

The Henry Cort Community College provides a successful and inclusive learning community, with specialist status in sport. Phil Munday, Principal said, I am very proud of our students and the examination results that they achieved this year. In particular I would like to highlight that this year group came to The Henry Cort Community College with on average key stage 2 results that were slightly below national average yet on both indicators we are now achieving significantly better results than national figures. It’s been a truly successful year and the students and staff deserve to be congratulated for their significant success!”

“Three of our students who are looked-after all exceeded their predicted grades for which they should be congratulated, with one student achieving 9 good GCSE passes today. They will be embarking on challenging post 16 courses in September.   This is a stark contrast to the national picture for children in care. According to the UK site for statistics on poverty and social exclusion*, a third of looked-after children obtain no GCSEs and a further fifth obtain fewer than five GCSEs.”

In recent years, The Henry Cort Community College has achieved results that place them amongst the top 25 per cent of schools in the country. The recent GCSE results follow on from a very successful OFSTED Report in October 2007 when the College was graded as ‘a good and improving college that provides a good standard of education for its students.’

Why not visit the Open Evening on Wednesday 6th October? For more details or to request a new prospectus, contact the college on Tel: 01329 843127. Alternatively, perhaps you would like to come along to a school tour at a time that is convenient for you. That way you can see for yourself what it’s like at The Henry Cort Community College.
